Eunice Kennedy Shriver
The Special Olympics represent an incredible opportunity for athletes who suffer from various types of intellectual disabilities to compete and have fun alongside others alike every few years. The Special Olympics Games gave a change to those who had not been very lucky in their lives to show that they could be as valuable in competing events as anyone else. However, they would not exist without the idea and the help of a very special lady, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Mrs. Shriver was the sister of President John F. Kennedy, as well as Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward Kennedy. Belonging to such an influential family it proved helpful in founding them in the year 1968.
Lady Eunice Kennedy Shriver has had an important contribution to the world as a political figure and due to the many charities that she had been involved in over the course of her life. The Kennedy sister showed great interest for the well-being of humanity which only stands to prove her great worth in the years of her life.
Not only did Eunice start the Special Olympics, but she was also the founder of Peace Corps, the American volunteer program responsible for cultural exchanges between American citizens and people of other cultures. As a United States Ambassador to France as well as a candidate for the vice-presidency, Mrs. Eunice showed great promise.
The Special Olympics remain one of Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s most incredible accomplishments. She was mainly interested in health issues and those regarding children and people with disabilities, which is what drove her to creating Olympic Games for the intellectually impaired and funding them from the beginning. By giving them this opportunity many special athletes have the chance today to show that they can surpass their disabilities and be great athletes in many competitions and sporting events. She believed that anyone could be exceptional and thousands of people have proven that over the years by competing in Eunice Kennedy's Special Olympics.
