Open to the public, the Special Olympics Town is a promotional event held during the USA National Games. This week-long event will feature food vendors, live performances, and opportunities to play games and compete against or with Special Olympics athletes. Each Special Olympics sponsor is given a booth to highlight their organization while supporting Special Olympics and its athletes. Each sponsor booth hosts a variety of games, giveaways, events and promotions throughout the week.
Included in Special Olympics Town, there is Fan Fest, Sports Experience and Healthy Athletes®. The Special Olympics Fan Fest will be the festival outside of Pershing Auditorium and is established to educate and entertain all constituent groups, providing every Games sponsor the opportunity to have an exhibit or activity showcasing their support. Special Olympics Sports Experience will be in the arena of Pershing Auditorium and is a unique sporting experience that unites people with and without intellectual disabilities through sports. Competing side by side leads to greater understanding and acceptance by peers without disabilities, but also improved social skills and confidence for the athletes with intellectual disabilities – not to mention long-lasting friendships that extend into the classroom and the community. Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® will be in the lower level of Pershing Auditorium and is established to help athletes to improve their training and competition by focusing on overall health and fitness. This is achieved through basic health screenings, provision of preventative and treatment services, educational information and referrals for follow-up care. Athletes have enhanced sports experiences and improved well-being as a result of receiving critical health services.
